After Allegedly Curing 13 Aids Patients, Dr. Sebi’s death was just as untimely as Nipsy’s. His was working on a film based on Dr. Sebi. Conspiracy theories are ubiquitous.

An Individual, Not Another Statistic

Nipsey dropped his first mixtape “Slauson Boy Volume 1″ in 2005.  He released his first studio record a little over a year ago. In those 13 years in between, Nipsey released mixtapes and had plenty of collaborations with prominent artists the ranks of which included YG, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, and Tyga. During thit period, Hussle was in flux with record companies and what he would later infer as restrictive contracts. Having success with his self released albums and songs gave him the artistic freedom he demanded. He flirted with big name labels like Epic and Warner Brothers over the last decade. In his own words, he, “just didn’t want to be “exploited by the music industry that been traditionally exploitive to our creators.”

Nipsey remained true to the streets. In a music genre where the authenticity of its artists are often put into question, his was never in doubt. Rap is typically pigeonholed and questioned in the same manner as professional wrestling. Nipsey was the real thing. Born Ermias Davidson Asghedom, Nipsey was a member of  the Rollin 60’s crips. His art was  true to his milieu. This life likely lead to his early death.

Rise in Recent Years

In 2016 Nipsey and fellow rapper YG released the song affectionally titled “ƒµç∑ Donald Trump.” Finally, Nipsey signed to major label Atlantic and in 2018 released his first official studio album “Victory Lap.” The album sold well. It was also well received critically, obtaining positive reviews from the Guardian and Pitchfork. This led to a Grammy nomination for Rap Album of the Year, which were held just 49 days ago.

Ermias Davidson Asghedom was shot today. The incident occurred at his clothing store Marathon at approximately 3:25 Pacific Time. Located on West Slauson Avenue, it is the same street for which he named his first album. He was 33 years old. His daughter and  2 year old son will now grow up fatherless.
